The Manufacturing Technology Centre (MTC) was established in 2010 as an independent Research and Technology Organisation (RTO), to bridge the gap between academia and industry - often referred to as 'the valley of death'.
The MTC is one of the largest of the seven centres making up the High Value Manufacturing Catapult (HVMC), representing one of the largest public sector investments in UK manufacturing. Over the following ten years the MTC’s rapid growth has seen the expansion of the campus with the construction of four more facilities, including the opening of the Advanced Manufacturing Training Centre and the National Centre for Additive Manufacturing.Their role has also increased to cover not only traditional manufacturing R&D but also training, business management, SME productivity improvement support, start-up incubation and Factory/Supply Chain/Product Design. In addition to working with traditional manufacturers and sectors the MTC is the manufacturing leader of the Construction Innovation Hub. MTC employs over 800 people and their purpose is:
“To create a significant positive impact on society by enabling product-based businesses to generate economic growth and people to develop technical skills and knowledge”.
The MTC provides integrated manufacturing system solutions for customers large and small, across sectors as diverse as automotive, aerospace, rail, informatics, food & drink, medical devices, construction/civil engineering, utilities, and defence.
They help companies design & manufacture faster, at a consistently higher quality and lower cost, in an agile environment in partnership with industry and academia. The facilities provide an environment for the development and demonstration of new technologies on an industrial scale, offering flexibility to clients and research partners.
The MTC is home of the Smart Manufacturing Accelerator and the Factory in a Box programme, which through the Energy Research Accelerator was developed to support energy businesses rapidly deploy technology solutions to market.
